Natural Tips for Flea Infestation

Posted on February 19, 2016 in Uncategorized

There are tens of chemical products designed to help you with flea control for cats, but without a recommendation from a good vet, it’s really hard to make a choice. Collars, sprays, drops and many other remedies – it’s easy to get lost trying to find effective ones. Not all of them can be used in every house either. Some people may be allergic to them, your pets can be too young or you may have kids, who should not have any contact with such substances. What’s the solution?

A good bath is a real deal

Flea Treatment8The simplest way of decreasing the number of fleas jumping happily on your pet (and around your house) is a warm bath. Before the bath, it’s good to put some water on your cat’s ears and neck, with a delicate soap – this will prevent fleas from trying to hide on your pet’s ears and neck during the bath. If, after the bath you use a thick comb to align the coat, you stand a chance of fully eliminating those insects from your pet’s fur. If your cat won’t let you bath it (what is quite probable), comb it every day with a good thick wet comb – this should, at least, decrease significantly the number of fleas living on your pet.

Set a trap

There are many different versions of flea traps. The most popular ones though, consist of strong chemicals and may have toxic effect on cats and dogs. The easiest trap one can set up is a lamp close to your pet’s sleeping place, and a plate with warm water and soap. The warmth will attract insects, which will then drown in the soapy water. If you’ve lost control over the flea problem you can try diatomaceous earth as it’s a great insect killer. Put it in the spots most ‘popular’ among the insects, wait a few hours and then vacuum everything. The diatomaceous earth is available in pet stores – don’t buy it anywhere else though as the other type may not be safe for you or your animals!

Keep everything clean

This should be obvious but not everyone remembers to thoroughly wash everything that belongs to your pet – including the blanket, toys, and clothes. Use high temperatures to make sure it kills the fleas. Don’t forget to vacuum regularly, including any holes, cracks and furniture – the eggs often fall off the host and fleas hatch around the house and not on your pet. Of course, throw away everything from the vacuum cleaner or the fleas will keep breeding inside it.

There are many other natural methods for flea treatment – the above ones are the simplest and most effective ones. There are also a few myths, which can be dangerous for your little friends. Some say you should feed your pet with garlic, but it’s highly toxic for cats. Others recommend certain essential oils too, but again some of them may be toxic for your animal and are not worth the risk. If the above methods won’t work, visit your vet and ask for help but if you are reading this article before your cat got infested, remember that prevention is better than cure.
